Hi friends!
Welcome to the weekly series of the top headlines in women's sports from the week — The Victory Lap!
Unstoppable Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns faced off in the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma claimed its fourth consecutive national championship on Thursday, June 6.
Throughout the season, the Sooners and the Longhorns took turns at the the top of the standings. The NCAA Women's Softball RPI even had Texas ranked No. 1 over Oklahoma on June 6.
The Longhorns took the series against the Sooners winning the final two of the three games. That didn't hurt Oklahoma's confidence as it defeated Texas in the shortest route to victory — two games.
Oklahoma now holds eight championship titles with each and every one of the titles being under head coach Patty Gasso.
Emma Hayes is just getting started
The former Chelsea manager turned coach for the U.S, women's national team, Emma Hayes, has two wins under her belt before heading into the headache of naming the Olympic roster.
Defeating Korea Republic twice on home soil without conceding, the USWNT looked sharp on the offensive.
The change of Crystal Dunn from defense to offense was sure to have growing pains, right?
Dunn scored in 13th minute of the second match against Korea Republic making it her first international goal since 2018.
With a new manager comes a new roster, Hayes brought in first time campers such as Sam Staab. (I wrote a piece for Girls Soccer Network in NOVEMBER about her need for a call up. Check it out here!)
Hayes has some difficult cuts to make for her Olympic roster with only 18 players allowed.
USA Basketball's Olympic 3x3 roster
The four person roster hosts Cameron Brink, Cierra Burdick, Rhyne Howard and Hailey Van Lith.
Brink is a rookie for the Los Angeles Sparks and was drafted No. 2 overall.
Burdick does not have a current team listed on the USA Basketball roster, but has most recently played in the WNBA with the Las Vegas Aces.
Howard is a guard for the Atlanta Dream and was names Rookie of the Year in 2022.
Van Lith has recently transferred to TCU to finish out her collegiate career. Prior to TCU, Van Lith was at LSU under Kim Mulkey.
Team USA will be competing against the other qualified teams such as top ranked Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, China, Germany, France or Spain.
Olympic 3x3 Basketball will kick off on Tuesday, July 30 in Paris, France.
